Create a content machine from one thought

YOU HAVE VALUE TO PROVIDE!

The key is how to distribute that value.

In this one email I’m going to

  1. Argue against a very common belief that you have to focus on ONE thing to be successful
  2. Show you how I wrote this one thought down, put it in my “content machine” and turned it into:

a. A podcast

b. Several tweets

c. YouTube video

d. A newsletter

The reason I’m showing you all this is because I believe that anyone and everyone can do this.

This is not fancy.

It’s not a crazy skill that I have.

It’s just about understanding the blueprint.

ALSO, an incredibly important variable of starting a business is your ability to package your idea.

The better you get at taking a thought and packaging it into something digestible and consumable, the more successful that idea will be.

Here’s the initial thought that started the fly wheel of content.

THE INITIAL THOUGHT

“Balls in the air”

I’m often given overwhelmed looks when I tell people all the different things I’m doing. I have to stop myself sometimes from saying too much, but when people ask me about my projects, I genuinely want to tell them about all the projects. My thought is that one of the things might be of interest to them and we can connect on it further.

While that is the my idealistic thought about how the interaction will go, most of the time it goes like this

“Oh wow, that’s a lot.”

But is it? Is it even enough?

If we aren’t where we want to be, shouldn’t we do EVERYTHING possible to get there?

Maybe that’s just me.

[End of thought]

From that initial thought, I wrote out a video script for record a solo podcast episode.

VIDEO SCRIPT

There's a super popular book out there that people like to point to all the time when they think you’re doing too many things. The ONE thing by Gary Keller

I love the idea of hyper focus, but I think the idea gets taken to literal. Partly due to the fact that people can tend to be pretty literal, but also because it’s easier to just do one thing. And in some cases, it’s better to just do one thing…

But at other times, It’s not better to do one thing

This isn't a law. It’s a bandwidth thing. And MOST “wanters” don’t have the bandwidth. They barely have the bandwidth to do their 9-5. Then if they can even fathom having anything else on top of that crazy 9-5 life, it HAS to just be one thing. But BIG dreams aren’t linear

There aren’t molds for how success works

You also aren’t going to succeed at the FIRST thing you try, so you have to be willing to do A TON.

One way that I’ve found to expedite that process is by working on several projects. And this doesn’t mean that I have several projects that I’m working on at the exact same second. That's not possible. BUT I do have several projects active. BECAUSE each of them has legs and potential. And I am capable of managing all of them with the team that I have. More on HOW I do that later

The POINT is that I am able to do it, so I do it. It didn’t start off that way. It started off with one thing and as that grew and my capacity grew, I added another thing. I am in the YES phase of my build right now. That’s another thing you’ll hear people say a lot. That you need to say no more than yes… which I totally agree with, but that’s an after the fact realization. What do you say when you're IN the fact… you say yes.

You experiment, iterate, fail, pivot, partner with people on things because you know the partnership alone will pay off tenfold, fail again, succeed, faille etc. YOU HAVE TO SAY YES before you have the luxury to say no.

That’s just how it goes.

People that have made it by saying no to everything but one thing will absolutely stand on platform next to their successful life and big house and tell you that’s exactly what you need to do, but there’s MILLIONS of us out there that are still in the W2 grid and HAVE to say yes to whatever opportunities we can to learn the skills, build the network, grow the business and get to the point when we can leave the W2 and THEN start saying no…

NO is earned.

Focus is key, but not in the common definition. Don’t focus on ONE THING, Focus instead on the creation as a whole. I AM focused. I'm focused on building my empire. And what does that look like. That looks like buying more storage. Buying more businesses. Building my personal brand. Creating content around what I’m doing and learning. Writing my newsletters. Partnering with like minded people. …. It ALSO means raising my kids. Taking care of my wife. being the fittest dad in the neighborhood.

From the script, I put it into chat got with this prompt:

1/ Balls in the Air
“Focus on one thing. Hyper-focus. Narrow your bandwidth.
That advice? Not bad—but often misunderstood.
Big dreams aren’t linear. Success isn’t a mold.
Sometimes, you NEED to juggle. Here’s why: 🧵

2/ People love quoting The ONE Thing by Gary Keller.
Hyper-focus is great, but it’s not law. It’s bandwidth.
Most people barely survive their 9-5. For them, ONE thing feels manageable.
But BIG dreams? Big goals? They demand more.

3/ Saying YES is underrated.
Everyone says, “You need to say no to everything but one thing.”
Sure—but NO is a privilege.
NO is earned.
Until you earn it, you say YES. Experiment. Fail. Pivot. Grow.

4/ People with success love to tell you how they hyper-focused on one thing.
But here’s the truth:
• You won’t succeed on your first try.
• Big dreams aren’t linear.
• Saying YES is part of the process.
You juggle until you don’t have to anymore.

5/ Hyper-focus gets misunderstood.
It’s not about doing ONE thing. It’s about focusing on the bigger picture: the creation as a whole.
For me, that looks like:
• Buying storage
• Acquiring businesses
• Building my brand
• Raising my kids
• Being the fittest dad around

6/ People who’ve made it love to tell you to focus on ONE thing.
But they’re talking AFTER success.
Before success? You juggle. You take every shot. You experiment, fail, pivot, and iterate.
You say YES so you can eventually afford to say NO.

7/ I’m not working on ONE thing. I’m working on ALL the things:
• Storage businesses
• Content creation
• Personal brand
• Partnerships
• Being a great dad & husband

Focus isn’t about shrinking your bandwidth. It’s about expanding it strategically.

8/ “Say no more than yes.” Sure—after you’ve built something.
But if you’re still working your 9-5, dreaming big, trying to break free?
You say YES. To opportunities. To risks. To experiments. To failure.
Saying NO comes later.

Each of these are great starts, but really just the skeleton that I’ll use to craft a tweet.

For example, this is what I wrote the other day using one of those as a template.

Steel these templates if you want. I’ll be editing them down anyway. Merry Christmas :)

Lastly, I recorded a video and then uploaded the video to Spotify for a podcast episode.

Several clips came out of it as well that I was able to post.

For this email I could have just copy and pasted the video script and called it a day for my newsletter.

That might have been more generally liked or read.

But I’m hoping there’s another curious cat out there that wants to know the behind the scenes of bringing an idea out into the world in the various forms of content.

This email is for you. Stay curious, my friend!

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.6min Read Because I don’t know if what I’m about to do is going to work. But I think it’s important that I at least try. So if this IS the last one... I appreciate you more than you know. Thank you for tuning in. Ok. Now that I got the hook out of the way (and possibly got you to keep reading)... I’m going to keep writing these emails. The only question is whether the email platform I’m building to replace the one I pay for every year will actually...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 3.5min Read October 16, 2025 was my last day as a police officer. Listen to this instead: HERE As you're reading this, it's been a full year since I left a career I thought I'd spend 30 years in. I didn't want to spend those 30 years there, but I didn't feel like I had another choice.BUT... I did believe I was meant to do bigger things. So in the background, for those 10 years, I experimented. I tinkered. I chased a lot of shiny objects. So if you...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.8min Read If you haven’t seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire... watch it when you can. I’ve referenced it a couple of times over the years, and I believe that movie is a brilliant representation of what is available to each and every one of us in life. I’m not saying everyone is going to make a million dollars or end up on a game show like that. What I’m saying is that as we go through life, every experience we have, everything we go through,...
