I’m not qualified for this, but let’s do it anyway!

Hey — quick story.

This week has been BUSY. All good, but nonetheless a lot. We’ve brought in multiple subcontractors, we’ve gotten 27 leads from our Facebook ads, I’m building an AI podcast generator and literally launching a full scale gutter stall still business…

Oh, and I had dinner with my kids every night.

That last part’s not always guaranteed so I don’t take it for granite.

The older I get, the more I realize something no one really told me:
You don’t have to pick between the blue collar and the tech world. You can do both.

This week’s Doughnut is all about blending those worlds — I’ll break down how I’m launching service businesses I don’t physically do… and apps I never learned to code.

Let’s get after it.

The Subcontractor “Flywheel” Model

What this model looks like is a fairly low-operations model.

The goal is to be a lead gen machine, get operations down to a T, and build an ecosystem that brings in leads, distributes them to subcontractors, and keeps the flywheel spinning.

Here’s what that looks like in reality with the gutter installation business.

Our Ecosystem:

  • A clean, conversion-focused gutter website
  • Meta ads running with different hooks and creative
  • A solid Google Business profile
  • All the backend systems (forms, call tracking, CRM, automations) firing properly

We are not gutter installers. But we partner with a subcontractor who is. And he’s dang good at what he does.

He’s not a business guy. He doesn’t want to deal with ads, calls, websites, or operations. He just wants to do great work and get paid

So we:

  • Bring in the leads
  • Handle the phone calls
  • Schedule and coordinate
  • Send him the jobs

He gives us his price.

We mark it up, send it to the customer, and keep the difference.

Simple. Scalable.

This model can be replicated across other services: painting, turf, fencing, even Christmas lights.

But here’s the secret:

You don’t need to be the expert at the trade. You need to be the expert at building trust, getting leads, and making the wheels turn.

You Don’t Need to Be a Genius — You Just Need to Keep Shipping

People think building apps is some high-IQ endeavor.

It’s not. Seriously.

I’ve never taken a CS course. I don’t know Python. I’m learning this stuff literally in between diaper changes, lawn quotes, and police shifts.

But here’s what I do know

  • How to prompt
  • How to break problems down
  • How to get help from AI tools
  • How to ship messy stuff
  • How to iterate fast

That combo alone lets me build useful, working software.

The secret isn’t being smart. It’s being curious enough to try and dumb enough not to quit.

I’ve shipped more products in 6 months than I did in the previous 6 years. Not because I’m super smart (I’m not). But because I finally stopped waiting to “feel ready.”

You don’t need a roadmap. You need momentum.

BITE #2:
— Would you subscribe

It’s still in progress, but let me break this down for you and potentially get your feedback if you have any.

I’m calling it Vibecaster—

AI will curate a daily personalized podcast for you in the topics you choose and want to hear about.

Delivered to you daily or weekly through email or text or whatever

Basically—
“We generate personalized audio content for busy people who want to stay informed without scrolling.

”Like a personalized newsletter in audio form.

So you (the user) will select 3-5 interests and then the system will pull the top posts, stories, trends, etc from the trusted sources we provide. It summarizes and distills the info and then presents it in a daily brief.

This could even be used to learn new information, study for an exam or even like a research assistant for specific research tasks.

Example— “I want to understand the most up to date events happening in the world of AI right now”

Boom! podcast generated.

And all of this can be done in different languages.

This is like Media as a Service (MaaS)

This is pretty much built. It’s operable. It’s awesome… but

THE QUESTION:
Would you pay for this?
I think about the mountain of subscriptions I have and I’m curious whether I’d want to add another one…

But it’s amazing. It’s a huge help to learn, distill and curate knowledge…

But if not for this specific use case, what use case could it be for?

The Education industry?
Maybe for professors or teachers?
Students?
Maybe specific to med school or law school?

I don’t know… but that’s definitely what we need to figure out. Any input you have is always welcome!

You have to try this out. It’s String.com. It’s the coolest freaking automation tool I’ve used. Is it perfect? No. Far from it. It’s in the Alpha phase right now. But it WILL get better. Absolutely mind blowing to be able to connect automations just by talking to it in common English. Check out the post I made about it.

Wrapping It Up

I’m not a general contractor. I’m not a coder.
But I’m building with both.

Because in 2025, the real leverage is this:

  • Know how to find problems
  • Learn how to build solutions to the problems you have
  • Surround yourself with people who can do the parts you can’t

That’s it. That’s the empire formula.

Until next time...

Stay in the fight,

P.S. If you’re building something right now — no matter how messy — hit reply. I’d love to hear about it. Maybe we jam on it together.

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.6min Read Because I don’t know if what I’m about to do is going to work. But I think it’s important that I at least try. So if this IS the last one... I appreciate you more than you know. Thank you for tuning in. Ok. Now that I got the hook out of the way (and possibly got you to keep reading)... I’m going to keep writing these emails. The only question is whether the email platform I’m building to replace the one I pay for every year will actually...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 3.5min Read October 16, 2025 was my last day as a police officer. Listen to this instead: HERE As you're reading this, it's been a full year since I left a career I thought I'd spend 30 years in. I didn't want to spend those 30 years there, but I didn't feel like I had another choice.BUT... I did believe I was meant to do bigger things. So in the background, for those 10 years, I experimented. I tinkered. I chased a lot of shiny objects. So if you...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.8min Read If you haven’t seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire... watch it when you can. I’ve referenced it a couple of times over the years, and I believe that movie is a brilliant representation of what is available to each and every one of us in life. I’m not saying everyone is going to make a million dollars or end up on a game show like that. What I’m saying is that as we go through life, every experience we have, everything we go through,...
