It’s Not Going To Be Perfect

Happy Sunday—

Perfection will absolutely destroy you. It’s a mirage. It doesn’t exist and if I’m being honest, you should completely forget about making it a reality.

I say that not for you to stop pursuing greatness. DONT EVER STOP THAT.

The point I’m making here is that if you’re so caught up trying to make things perfect, you’re going to overlook the thing that actually matter— moving the needle.

Over time the work that we do becomes closer to perfect, but it has to start somewhere.

It’s going to messy and that WILL be ok. I promise.

But you HAVE to start in that mess, without everything figured out in order to get far enough down the road to ACTUALLY produce a product worthy of success.

Getting that monologue out of the way, I’ll share a real life example of this battle with perfection vs. just moving the needle forward

I’ve talked about this here before, but we are building home service businesses where we handle the whole ecosystem of the business and hire subcontractors to do the work.

It’s a beautiful model, but we are definitely still trying to figure it all out. Specifically with our sub contractors. They aren’t employees of ours and generally they have their own jobs outside of what we give them, but when we give them a job— it’s already booked and ready to go. We NEED them to perform.

Everything in the ecosystem that we have is set up and operational, but it’s only as good as the subs.

The issue we have right now is our subs going dark on us. We have some that we’ve sent leads to and need communication back about and crickets…

We’ve addressed this by laying out a flow for each of the subs so that they could understand the process clearly.

Here’s a LINK to the general flow that we have with them if you want to steal it—

Some guys just don’t want to play ball. They want to do it their way.

And that’s ok.

But if I was obsessed with perfection, I’d be a ball of stress.

The reason we build this model this way is so that if we have to drop a sub, we can easily plug another right in.

The more that we iterate with everything here, the better we’ll get. As we continue down this path, we make mistakes that we didn’t know existed. Then we adjust and continue.

Progress over perfection

I’m reading a book right now called “Coders” that talks about the history and development of coding over the last several decades. From the early EARLY days of physical punch cards, to more current “brogrammers”. There’s a big theme that I’m seeing here in all eras of coding—
Move fast and break things. Said another way— just ship it.

Here’s a story for you to illustrate this point: A buddy of mine grew up working on cars with his dad. As they finished the build, his dad would run the engine at high speeds for a super long time. One time he asked his dad why they did that, wouldn’t that ruin the work they just did. His dad replied “It’s better to run it hard and break it now so that you can fix it quick instead of taking it out and it breaking later when it’s inconvenient”.

This can relate to so many different parts of business and being an entrepreneur so I’ll let you transfer that sorry into whatever situation you want. Moral — Move fast and break things.

🍩 BITE 2
— How IG started

Instagram started as an app called “Burbn” , this was a quirky nightlife check in / posting app.

Kevin Systrom had raised $500k to develop the app, but it was getting super cluttery. Mike Krieger came on board and partnered to build Burbn up… But it wasn’t really performing the way they wanted it to…

However, there was ONE feature that users were really enjoying- the ability to post pictures.

So they stripped it down and JUST focused on that.

Instagram was born.

The idea here is that you just have to START.

The path you start on might not lead anywhere meaningful,

BUT along the way you’ll find new paths that ultimately take you where you want to end up.

READER FEEDBACK REQUEST (totally optional of course… but I think you’re cool and your opinion matters)

I know that it might feel impossible to keep up with all the new AI coming out what seems like every day. It really is a ton. Even I struggle staying as up to date as I’d really like… But this is such an incredible time to be involved in all of this, I don't want to miss a thing. I want to be on the ground floor of all of these developments— testing, experimenting and building… If you feel the same way, I’ve been tinkering with a project that I could use your feedback on 👇

It’s being built to be the most up to date platform for anything and everything related to vibecoding. Google, but for all your vibecoding questions. AI will pull from several different sources and aggregate the answers to the questions that you have.

Maybe vibecoding isn’t your thing, and that's ok, you can archive this email now… but if you in any way are dabbling with this stuff, id love to know WHAT you would want from a platform all about vibecoding. Just shoot me a reply or DM me on twitter… or text me if you have my cell ;)

Until next time...

Stay in the fight,

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.6min Read Because I don’t know if what I’m about to do is going to work. But I think it’s important that I at least try. So if this IS the last one... I appreciate you more than you know. Thank you for tuning in. Ok. Now that I got the hook out of the way (and possibly got you to keep reading)... I’m going to keep writing these emails. The only question is whether the email platform I’m building to replace the one I pay for every year will actually...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 3.5min Read October 16, 2025 was my last day as a police officer. Listen to this instead: HERE As you're reading this, it's been a full year since I left a career I thought I'd spend 30 years in. I didn't want to spend those 30 years there, but I didn't feel like I had another choice.BUT... I did believe I was meant to do bigger things. So in the background, for those 10 years, I experimented. I tinkered. I chased a lot of shiny objects. So if you...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.8min Read If you haven’t seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire... watch it when you can. I’ve referenced it a couple of times over the years, and I believe that movie is a brilliant representation of what is available to each and every one of us in life. I’m not saying everyone is going to make a million dollars or end up on a game show like that. What I’m saying is that as we go through life, every experience we have, everything we go through,...
