Should I buy this business??

2.7min Read

Let’s talk about a business deal on the table that I’m thinking through and want to share the ins and outs of—

I’ll keep this tight and tactical!

The deal — This is a swim school that is run locally.

My daughters actually learned how to swim from the sister of this business owner. The background here is I know the sister of this owner. Both sisters own separate swim schools. The first sister wanted to sell her school business to me a few years back, but the timing wasn’t right at the time. It unfortunately didn’t get sold and her clients just went elsewhere… which I HATE to see happen…

NOW, her sister (the owner of this deal) wants to sell. Very similar numbers, similar area, similar everything. The timing MIGHT be right this go around, but still lots to think about

The breakdown — It’s been around for over two decades and is currently profitable. Last year it generated $54k in revenue and $45k in net income.

BUT, if I hire instructors and rent a pool (rather than using the owner’s backyard), that profit falls to down substantially…

Here are the -

Pros:

Strong demand: There's always a waitlist, she has incredibly loyal customers and there are always kiddos and families of kiddos that are in need of this service

Established reputation: Over 26 years and still going… crazy! The owner has built MAJOR trust with families… so much so that she barely has to market… and by barely, I mean that she DOESNT have to market…

Proven training model: She has it dialed in. Everything is ran to a tee so it would just be a matter of keeping that program going

Upside: There is so much room to add to this. Just in marketing alone! Establishing web presence, running ads, promoting referrals, etc. So much that can be done that ISN’T being done.

Cons:

Thin margins: Lets be honest, the margins aren’t great! I’d need to pay instructors (≈ $30/hr) and then rent a pool (≈ $25/hr)… that all really adds up

Facility dependence: The current setup is in her backyard pool. Which is awesome… BUT, I dont have a pool and I dont get to keep hers with the deal. Renting lanes at public or gym pools might get messy if I’m really thinking about it.

Limited scale: With one pool and a just the small team she has now, growth is definitely capped unless we think through expanding to multiple locations

What I’m processing
—
There’s TONS of potential in expanding this outside of the backyard model. Maybe a hybrid approach of some kind where I could combine renting lanes at community pools for group classes WITH private sessions in the pools of clients… if they have one.

Ultimately, the decision comes down in my mind to balancing how much I could really make here with the involvement needed…

Here's the CATCH
— I don't think she even has an asking price… it might just be a business giveaway. And if that is the case, AND if I can hire out the teaching hours that she did/ secure a pool, this could be fairly “hands off”… for an extra 20-30k during the season… but is that worth it? I don't know, but it’s definitely something worth thinking about.

Short email for you all today, but sometimes we just need to think through things like this and put ourselves in that scenario, so when the time does come to pull the trigger on something, you’ll have already been there.

🍩 BITE 1
— The importance of finding purpose

I think I’ll write a full newsletter on this at a later time, but I waned to throw this in as a bite for this week at least. If you have been following for a bit, I recently quit my job as a police officer and went all in on the businesses I have and the opportunities that had been presented. For the full story you can read this:

I’m one week in and have some mind blowing insight… Your happiness level increases the closer you get to living out your purpose. I know that might seem like the most obvious statement you’ve ever heard, but how many people can ACTUALLY say that they are living out their purpose? I’m gonna guess not too many. Well I’m here to tell you that while I have not “made it yet” by any definition of the word, I am now closer to doing the thing that I was MEANT to do, than I have ever been before.

And if I’m being honest, I’m not 100% sure what that thing is, but I KNOW that what I’m working on now is in the right direction

My days are now spent in deep dives of both my content as well as Chris Koerner's content. One of my new roles is his twitter account manager. For some, that might seem the furthest thing from fun, but for me— this is literally a front row seat and foot in the door to a man that has FIGURED IT OUT. I’m getting paid to learn from one of the best entrepreneurs and content creators of our time. It’s a dream, seriously! Here are some really interesting ways that I’m finding produces a ton of traction when it comes to building a twitter following:

  • Repurpose content — Chris logs EVERY tweet he has ever written. I go through them, find the bangers and repurpose them in different ways to keep the algorithm alive
  • Content extraction — Everything can become content. Do not sleep on or waste ANYTHING that you do. Videos you make, zoom calls you’re on, conversations you have, etc, you can use ALL of that in one way or another to produce posts that go viral.
  • Highlight the virality — Not all YouTube videos you make are going to crush it, there might just be a few clips from the entire video that people really like. Get good at finding those clips, cutting them out and repurposing THOSE.

Just so you know— it is ENTIRELY possible now to use a vibe coding app like Loveable and take it from idea to production ready. Even just a couple months ago this wasn’t totally the case. NOW it is. I sat down with a very well versed developer and he shared with me an app he built for a client 100% in Loveable. The world has forever changed.

Until next time...

Stay in the fight,

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.6min Read Because I don’t know if what I’m about to do is going to work. But I think it’s important that I at least try. So if this IS the last one... I appreciate you more than you know. Thank you for tuning in. Ok. Now that I got the hook out of the way (and possibly got you to keep reading)... I’m going to keep writing these emails. The only question is whether the email platform I’m building to replace the one I pay for every year will actually...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 3.5min Read October 16, 2025 was my last day as a police officer. Listen to this instead: HERE As you're reading this, it's been a full year since I left a career I thought I'd spend 30 years in. I didn't want to spend those 30 years there, but I didn't feel like I had another choice.BUT... I did believe I was meant to do bigger things. So in the background, for those 10 years, I experimented. I tinkered. I chased a lot of shiny objects. So if you...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.8min Read If you haven’t seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire... watch it when you can. I’ve referenced it a couple of times over the years, and I believe that movie is a brilliant representation of what is available to each and every one of us in life. I’m not saying everyone is going to make a million dollars or end up on a game show like that. What I’m saying is that as we go through life, every experience we have, everything we go through,...
