The Price of Opportunity

2.7min Read

Let me start out by saying this email might be a little bit cryptic, but I promise that in future letters I’ll cover all the missing details you might be curious about.

What IS the price of opportunity? In some cases you can quantify it— most often with a dollar amount.

But then there are other situations where you can’t really put a price on it. At least not in the moment that you’d really like to know.

This is where it gets tricky.

It is human nature for us to seek security.

It’s engrained in us.

We are built to survive at all costs and while we don’t have wild animals chasing us anymore… for the most part…

— Our stress is self imposed these days. It’s about the decisions that need to be made (or that were already made) and the opportunities that we are presented with on any daily basis.

So what happens when you run into one of these scenarios where an opportunity is presented and you can’t totally quantify the value of it? What do you do then?

First let me share a few different scenarios that are real actual situations I’ve heard recently.

  • I have a buddy that was a teacher up until last week. This guy is a rock star. AI genius and content creator. He jumped on the AI train early and started developing a brand around it. Being a teacher is a great secure job. Benefits, salary, impact, all the check boxes. But he was approached by a tech company for the role of a lifetime. Doing exactly what he loves to do but for more money. In this case the opportunity is quantifiable. The money is more and the growth is more. But that doesn’t make the decision any less hard. He’s betting on himself and stepping away from something that was known, comfortable and THERE.
  • Another buddy of mine is an engineer. He is an absolute guru with programming. He can build and do pretty much anything that you’d ever need. But he’s miserable at his job. And he has been for a while. His skill set is SO valuable, but he craves to unleash it on the world and not be tied down to the toxic work environment that he’s in everyday. Just the other week a client of his signed a retainer for him to work for them paying just enough to achieve escape velocity. It’s not a ton, but it’s ENOUGH. The opportunity in this case isn’t super clear. To most people, the gamble might be too risky, but that’s why most people don’t achieve the success they dream of

Let’s zoom out and figure this out for a sec.

If you’re basing your life on only quantifiable opportunities, you’re imposing your own ceiling. Not everything is going to be cut and dry.

Don’t get me wrong I LIKE cut and dry… but it doesn’t always work that way. Success isn’t a straight line. It’s kind of all over the place and in some cases, you have to move backwards to move forward.

The constant is YOU. Do you believe in you?

Are you confident in YOUR skills?

Do you feel deeply passionate about what you do?

Are you willing to bet on YOU?

Forget everything else, just think through and answer those questions first.

When the answer to those are yes— you’ll be unstoppable.

Here’s a percentage I like to think about:

You should be 80% excited and 20% scared.

Being scared is normal. It’s part of the pie chart. Just hopefully it’s less of a percentage than the excited.

I’m in a mastermind community for entrepreneurs and we had a call today. On the call a lady in the group got on and shared an app that she just built— listen to this story. Her background is caring for patients with dementia. Her mother was just diagnosed with it. She built an app powered by AI for the family members / caregivers of people going through this. She is not a coder. Not a developer. Not an engineer. She just vibecoded her way to a supernatural product. What a time to be alive...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.6min Read Because I don’t know if what I’m about to do is going to work. But I think it’s important that I at least try. So if this IS the last one... I appreciate you more than you know. Thank you for tuning in. Ok. Now that I got the hook out of the way (and possibly got you to keep reading)... I’m going to keep writing these emails. The only question is whether the email platform I’m building to replace the one I pay for every year will actually...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 3.5min Read October 16, 2025 was my last day as a police officer. Listen to this instead: HERE As you're reading this, it's been a full year since I left a career I thought I'd spend 30 years in. I didn't want to spend those 30 years there, but I didn't feel like I had another choice.BUT... I did believe I was meant to do bigger things. So in the background, for those 10 years, I experimented. I tinkered. I chased a lot of shiny objects. So if you...

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 2.8min Read If you haven’t seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire... watch it when you can. I’ve referenced it a couple of times over the years, and I believe that movie is a brilliant representation of what is available to each and every one of us in life. I’m not saying everyone is going to make a million dollars or end up on a game show like that. What I’m saying is that as we go through life, every experience we have, everything we go through,...
