This Is How You Figure Out What To Charge

2.7min Read

Let me tell you something that I’m bad at—

My kids would say singing.
My wife might say loading the dishwasher properly…

And while they would all be right, that’s not what we’re talking about today.

I am bad at letting clients know what my time and skills are worth.

BUT

I’m getting better at this and I’ll share with you WHY and HOW I’m doing it.

You could read this next sentence and totally skip the rest of the email… but don’t, you’re better than that.

The best way at figuring out what your time and skills are worth (what to charge clients) is by…….

SENDING MORE INVOICES.

Hear me out—
Sure, you could calculate a random hourly rate and then multiply that by the hours worked and that’s your price… but I HATE the idea of valuing myself based on hours.

I did that for years.

I had to be there doing the thing in order to get paid. That’s no fun.

You don’t want that

You want to be paid based on the value you provide.
So then how can you figure THAT number out.

I’m sure others have a much more dialed in formula, but here’s mine.

Make up a number that feels good to you for WHATEVER reasons you want to justify it with, then pitch it.

If the client pays, guess what? That's your new price.
The next client, it’ll be more.

Then you keep climbing that ladder.

Recently I gave an AI presentation (I shared about it in the last newsletter)

And to my surprise, they paid me for my time. I didn’t ask for that nor did I expect it. But NOW, that is my going rate.

Another example:

I just acquired a new client for a website build. I pitched him a higher price than I’m ever asked for. He didn’t blink. Now THAT is my new price.

The way you get better at this and make more money is by taking on more clients. With each invoice paid, you will gain more confidence in what you deliver and what you are worth.

The confidence allows for you to ask for what you deserve and to be okay walking away if they don’t want to pay it.

As much as you possibly can, don’t backpedal. Unlessssss you realllly need the money or it’s a buddy hook up or something like that. Even then, stay strong. I believe in you.

That really covers it but here’s a TLDR of anything else noteworthy

  1. I’m growing my IG, TT & YT accounts by sharing day in the life content. All with the goal of continuing to build my brand and share the journey with everyone that wants to follow along.
  2. As I write this, I'm on a flight to Dallas for an in person meet up with the TKO Community. Kind of blown away that I get to do this for work now! I appreciate each and every one of you that have been here from the earlyyyy days.

We are just getting started!

Please please use 2FA.

ALSO— be cool to people on the internet. It’s because of friendships I’ve made, two dudes jumped to my rescue and helped get my account back in action.

An entrepreneur's recipe for sweet success 3.1 min Read But it didn't… But ALMOST. Which is crazy for me to say because I absolutely love writing these each week. I usually write them on Thursdays and I literally don't schedule anything else in the early morning so that I can do this. It's a treat. So to think that I ALMOST had AI write this for me is WILD. Mainly because: I never thought that AI would really be able to portray my writing voice. It's not formal by any means. There's random...
